Alberto Nones (Trento, Italy, 1975) is a pianist, philosopher, music historian, and tenured Professor at the prestigious “G. Rossini” Conservatory of Music of Pesaro, Italy. He is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive intellectual and artistic voices of his generation, combining high-level performance, scholarly research, and interdisciplinary reflection in a way that is exceptionally rare in today’s musical landscape. His work is driven by a broad cultural vision that seeks to rethink the meaning of making music in the twenty-first century and to renew our interpretative perspectives through the dialogue between music, philosophy, and society.
Nones is the author of four musicological monographs dedicated to Riccardo Zandonai, Giuseppe Verdi, Francesco Antonio Bonporti, and The Doors, as well as three edited volumes, including Classical Music in a Changing World: Crisis and Vital Signs, co-edited with the distinguished American composer and musicologist Lawrence Kramer. He has also published numerous articles in leading international peer-reviewed journals, establishing himself as an authoritative voice in contemporary musicological debate.
His recording activity, consistently praised by critics, reflects a conception of music as a space where interpretation, historical consciousness, and human experience converge. He is currently engaged in an ambitious project to record the complete works of Chopin, having already released the Mazurkas, Nocturnes, Fantasies, Waltzes—including the waltz rediscovered in New York in 2024—Preludes, and Impromptus. His discography also includes a recording devoted to Rachmaninov and Silvestrov, conceived as an act of cultural diplomacy and solidarity, Reflecting Mozart, and the first recording of the Nocturnes by Palestinian composer Mahmoud Abuwarda, whose work he has championed internationally.
An exceptionally gifted chamber musician, he has recorded the Brahms Sonatas with noted Italian violinist Franco Mezzena and several albums dedicated to vocal chamber repertoire with renowned sopranos, including works by Cimara, Isang Yun, and Brahms, as well as the complete songs for soprano and piano by Marco Anzoletti, resulting from his research on previously unpublished materials. He has performed and lectured extensively throughout Europe, the United States, Russia, the Middle East, and Africa.
Nones’s educational background is unique. He graduated with highest honors in Piano from the Conservatory of Trento and pursued further studies with musicians such as Paul Badura-Skoda and Franco Scala. He also graduated with highest honors in Philosophy from the University of Bologna, earned an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, and completed a Ph.D. at the University of Trento. He was subsequently a Marie Curie Research Fellow at Cambridge and a Fulbright Fellow and Postdoctoral Researcher at Princeton.
With more than twenty-five years of teaching experience spanning piano, music history, chamber music, philosophy, and the social sciences, he has taught at universities and conservatories across Italy and abroad and has held several institutional leadership positions. He is a SIAE-registered author and composer, Director of the European Association for Music and Communication (AEMC) since 2017, an expert for the European Commission’s EACEA, a recurrent visiting professor at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Palestine, and co-founder of the Intercultural Conservatory of Music in Istanbul. Altogether, his trajectory represents a rare model of the musician-intellectual: a figure able to bridge artistic excellence, rigorous scholarship, and international cultural engagement.
