Agata Bienkowska
Agata Bieńkowska was born in Poland. She trained in Gdańsk and Stuttgart, further refining her skills in singing and stage performance under the guidance of Julia Hamari and Robert Hiller (chamber music). Her talent has been recognized by prestigious institutions such as the Wagner-Verband Stuttgart, the Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung, the DAAD (Germany), the Rotary Foundation of Stuttgart, and by Maestro Luciano Pavarotti, who awarded her the Donizetti Prize at the Teatro di Bergamo in 2006.
She has successfully participated in numerous international competitions, including the Belvedere Competition in Vienna, the Luxembourg International S. Geszty Competition, the European Union Competition, and the P. Domingo Operalia. She made her operatic debut at a very young age in Gdańsk and Stuttgart (Mozart roles, Nero in L’incoronazione di Poppea by Monteverdi, and Romeo in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi), and in 1998 she took part in the Accademia Rossiniana in Pesaro. In 1999, she made her debut at the Teatro Massimo under the baton of Daniel Oren.
From that moment on, she became a regular guest at leading theatres and festivals in Italy and abroad: Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro di San Carlo, the theatres of Modena, Verona, Ferrara, Cesena and Pisa, the Rossini Opera Festival, the Festival della Toscana, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Théâtre Royal de Wallonie, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Teatro de La Maestranza in Seville, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Wexford Opera Festival, the Festival de Musique de Strasbourg, and many others.
She has collaborated with conductors of the caliber of N. Santi, A. Zedda, J. Neschling, V. Jurowski, D. Callegari, S. Ranzani, C. Rousset, A. De Marchi, Y. P. Tortelier, G. Gelmetti, and J. L. Cobos, as well as with renowned stage directors such as Dario Fo, Roberto De Simone, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Luca Ronconi, and Graham Vick, performing alongside artists such as M. Freni, M. Devia, G. Surnian, G. Kunde, and J. D. Flórez.
Possessing remarkable versatility and rare linguistic fluency (she speaks seven languages), she brings interpretative sensitivity to music ranging from Monteverdi to contemporary works, with a particular focus on the bel canto repertoire. She has also collaborated with Baroque music ensembles. Her discography is extensive and includes rare works by Rossini, Massenet, Mercadante, Mosca, C.P.E. Bach, and Handel, as well as world premiere recordings such as La prima Diva, dedicated to Faustina Bordoni, and the oratorio Dalla morte alla vita di Santa Maria Maddalena by Leonardo Leo.
Alongside her artistic activity, she has pursued an academic and teaching career: in 2017, she was awarded the Doctor of Musical Arts (PhD) degree. In 2024, the President of the Republic of Poland conferred upon her the title of Professor in the discipline of Musical Arts, the highest national academic distinction. Agata Bieńkowska is Professor of Voice at the Rossini Conservatoire in Pesaro.
