Mahmoud Abuwarda is a Palestinian composer, classical guitarist, and music educator whose evocative works bridge the rich heritage of traditional Arabic music with Western classical music. Born in Gaza, Abuwarda creates compositions that profoundly explore memory, displacement, and hope, characterized by their cinematic sweep, rhythmic vitality, and deep emotional resonance.
He received his early musical training in classical guitar at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music (ESNCM) in Palestine, studying under Pedro López de La Osa. He later advanced his studies in music theory and composition at Berklee College of Music, supported by the prestigious Gary Burton Scholarship, and further honed his craft through private composition studies with renowned composers Julian Broughton and Maurice Saylor. As an esteemed academic voice, he was recently invited as a guest lecturer at the University of Oklahoma’s School of Music to share his expertise in world music.
For a decade (2012–2022), Abuwarda played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of musicians in Palestine, serving as a professor of composition, a music theory instructor, and head of the guitar department at the ESNCM, while also directing the “Sea and Freedom” Music Festival.
As a composer, Abuwarda’s catalog encompasses orchestral works, chamber music, and solo instrumental pieces that have garnered international acclaim. His works have been performed across the Middle East, Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Notable milestones include the performance of his orchestral work “A Story to Tell” by the Orquestra Sinfonietta de Lisboa in Portugal, and the showcasing of his piano works on the prestigious Fazioli Pianos artist platform.
Recognized by industry leaders such as Steinberg’s Dorico and featured in international arts publications, Abuwarda’s dedication to fostering intercultural dialogue was recently honored when he was named a winner at the 2026 JERUS-IT-ARTS International Contest. Whether through his upcoming collaboration with global publishers such as Halidon Music or his academic engagements in the United States, he remains a compelling contemporary voice, bringing the nuances of his heritage to a worldwide audience.
